Available Classes
Math
Abacus Learning now offers math instruction designed to address the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and other core math skills (fractions, decimals, word problems, etc.). These classes are specifically designed for learners who:
- Struggle with the fundamentals of basic math skills
- Have emerging skills in these areas but need further practice to really get it
- Need to “keep the juices flowing” so they don’t experience regression between classes and instructional days
Our classes are carefully tailored to last for 40 minutes. This gives the instructor ample time to provide instruction and lead guided practice with enough time left over for the student(s) to practice on their own and ask questions.

Reading Comprehension
At Abacus Learning, we know that strong reading skills are the key to success across subject areas. Our reading classes address the key principles of comprehension toward making reading less strenuous and more enjoyable.
These classes are perfect for students who:
- Have difficulty identifying the main idea of reading material
- Have a hard time recognizing and understanding figurative language
- Find abstract language and inference challenging
- Enjoy reading but get discouraged when asked to answer critical thinking questions about what they have read
Our classes are carefully tailored to last for 40 minutes. This gives the instructor ample time to provide instruction and lead guided practice with enough time left over for the student(s) to practice on their own and ask questions.
Writing
Any teacher can tell you that getting their students to write can be one of the most challenging parts of their job. At Abacus Learning, we know this is true because we live it every day. Each session is laser-focused on the fundamentals of generating that first sentence and providing a clear, easy-to-follow outline toward composing full sentences, paragraphs and essays. Our classes are carefully tailored to last for 40 minutes. This gives the instructor ample time to provide instruction and lead guided practice with enough time left over for the student(s) to practice on their own and ask questions.
The students who will get the most out of these classes:
- Enjoy the creative process of writing, but hate the physical act of writing
- Are highly creative, but have difficulty organizing their thoughts
- Are easily discouraged by difficulties with spelling and grammar
Free Academic Support!
Everybody knows that there is no such thing as a free lunch, but, for many home school students in California there is such a thing as FREE academic support!
If you attend a home school/independent study charter school in the state of California, your school may provide you with a Learning Fund to pay for enrichment classes and courses. From horseback riding and piano lessons to the academic support Abacus Learning offers, your fund can be spent any way you want with the vendors your school has approved.
Don’t see us on your school’s vendor list? No problem. Contact your school and submit a request to have us added!

IMPORTANT NOTE
Abacus Learning’s Academic Classes are based on repetition allowing students to join at different points in the school year. It is highly recommended that all students attend the classes that start the first week because the first lessons are very basic and they are an excellent opportunity to build those basic academic skills and – equally important – their self-confidence.
